3/29/2006 - Washington, DC - Last night the House Rules Committee reported out for floor consideration H.R. 609, the College Access and Opportunity Act of 2006.
The bill consists of most of the provisions approved by the Education and the Workforce Committee last year on a party-line vote, though those provisions enacted earlier this year as part of the Deficit Reduction Act have been stripped out. A summary of the parts of the bill, including an amendment to be offered by Chairman McKeon of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, that concern student loans will be provided in a supplemental edition of the Daily Briefing later this afternoon.
Over 100 amendments to H.R. 609 were proposed by various members. One of these was a Student Aid Reward Act amendment proposed by Representatives Miller and Petri. NCHELP, together with CBA, EFC, Nelnet and SLSA, sent a letter yesterday to all members of the House urging them to vote against the STAR amendment, if o ffered. The Rules Committee did not find this amendment to be in order. However, the Rules Committee is scheduled to meet again today and more amendments may be approved for a vote. |
